About ESL

English as a Second Language (ESL) is a program of instruction designed to help adults, who are limited English proficient, to achieve competence in writing, reading, and speaking the English language.

In addition to these components, other specialized instructional areas include:

Family Literacy
  • Integrates all of the following activities:
  1. Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children,
  2. Training parents regarding how to be the primary instructor for their children and full partners in the education of their children,
  3. Parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency, and
  4. An age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences.
Workplace Literacy
  • Offered to help employees improve the skills specific to their job performance and to work on a High School Equivilency.
Correctional Education
  • Assists incarcerated individuals in improving their academic skills and obtaining a High School Equivilency.

According to the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1993, literacy is defined as:

“An individual’s ability to read, write, and speak in English, compute, and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family of the individual, and in society.”

The LCC Adult Education Program has many class times available to meet the needs of our communities. Luna Community College’s AE Program serves the counties of San Miguel, Guadalupe, Mora, and Colfax counties. Please call regarding specific community day and time offerings.
